The IURC Latin America programme held its webinar n.16 “Smart Specialization Strategies and Sustainability”, on June 27th, 2023. The event focused on the sustainability dimension of these strategies and their application in industrial and local contexts, including their relevance to industrial policies and innovation hubs. The discussions aimed to inspire the mobilization of research and innovation to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in diverse territorial contexts, even in the face of challenges.
Key takeaways from the webinar included the importance of regenerative economy and the need for innovative solutions to address the climate emergency. Shifting from a quantitative to a qualitative approach for measuring the economy was emphasized as crucial for addressing global challenges. The lessons learned highlighted the progress made in sustainability, while emphasizing the importance of considering various types of capital and embracing regeneration.
Speakers also stressed the need for holistic Smart Specialization Strategies that prioritize coherence, integration, and the SDGs. They emphasized the significance of sufficiency, resilience, efficiency, environmental impacts, and digitalization opportunities in shaping future strategies.
Additionally, the webinar showcased success stories from the Basque Country, HUB Providencia in Chile, and Chile’s National Agency for Research and Development (ANID). The Basque Country’s industrial policy aligns with global challenges, focusing on digital-technological, energy-climate, and social-health transitions. HUB Providencia, as the largest municipal collaboration ecosystem in Chile, supports innovation and entrepreneurship across multiple industries, contributing to the national innovation culture. The Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation in Chile, along with the ANID, is committed to promoting sustainable development through science and technology. ANID’s “Territorial Impact Acceleration Nodes” instrument strengthens local ecosystems and ensures that scientific and technological activities have a societal impact.
The webinar concluded with an optimistic outlook on the potential of smart specialization strategies and sustainability to shape a better future. By embracing innovation, inclusivity, and regenerative design, these strategies offer opportunities for sustainable development and the achievement of the SDGs.
