On March 22nd, IURC Latin America held its webinar #13 “Right to Green: Building parks through Community Engagement. Case Studies from Barranquilla, Essen, and Fortaleza”.

The webinar sought to open up a technical discussion on the provision of inclusive access to green areas in cities. Three international experiences on the creation of micro-parks and the implementation of greening strategies, with strong participatory methodologies and community engagement, were discussed to highlight opportunities and challenges. Manuel Trujillo introduced Barranquilla’s award-winning programme “Todos al Parque”, that participated to the restoration of public spaces in parks through an equitable process of citizen participation taking into account the needs of local communities. His intervention was followed by Victor Macedo and Luciana Mendes’s presentations about microparks in Fortaleza, a pilot project to transform underused or vacant spaces into public green areas, that are co-created with local communities and integrate citiens’ expectations into their design. Finally, Jonathan Walgenbach shared insights about Essen’s “Tiny forests”, that seek to increase biodiversity in the city and allow citizens to learn more about nature. The initiative is actively involving local schools and citizens that can participate in planting and maintenance activities.

Participants from 18 cities and 11 countries joined the webinar.
