In the framework of the International Urban and Regional Cooperation Programme (IURC Latin America), funded by the European Union, a delegation of three senior officials from the Mexican city of Hermosillo carried out a three-day study visit to the city of Debrecen, Hungary, on 26, 27 and 30 May 2022.
The Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, Dr. Lajos Barca, received the delegation on 27 May and stressed the importance of international cooperation and in particular, the European Union for supporting the exchange of good practices between the two cities. Likewise, it was also valued the experience that Hermosillo could contribute to the future installation of the BMW plant in Debrecen.
In this regard, in recent months both cities have shared lessons learned on the design and implementation of nature-based solutions to improve water management, as well as the promotion of green infrastructure and the improvement of public spaces to reduce the impact of heat islands. Thus, during the three-day visit, important meetings were held with representatives of the Municipality of Debrecen, Debrecen’s Urban and Economic Development Center – EDC, the CIVAQUA project, AKSD (waste management company), and the Trans Tisza Water Directorate – TIVZIG. In addition, during the three-day study visit, the delegation visited the CIVAQUA project and numerous public spaces, urban gardens, and green areas such as the Great Forest and the Erdőspuszta arboretum.
The IURC programme constitutes the second phase of the International Urban Cooperation (IUC, 2016-2020) programme and aims to lead and develop a form of decentralized international urban and regional cooperation in the fields of sustainable urban development and regional innovation. The programme supports pairings between cities and regions in the European Union with their counterparts in six Latin American countries: Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, and Chile. In total, the IURC Latin America network of cities and regions consists of 24 cities and 20 regions.
