Urban mobility and environmental sustainability go hand in hand, and Bergamo is leading by example with its comprehensive bike initiative, bergamoinbicicletta.it. With transport accounting for around 25% of CO2 emissions in the EU—70% from road transport—encouraging alternative mobility solutions is more important than ever.
Bergamo, a city of 120,000 residents nestled within a larger province of over 1 million, faces unique mobility challenges, especially given its varied topography. Currently, 70% of the province’s daily 1.85 million trips are made by private car, a trend that contributes to northern Italy’s high air pollution levels.
To tackle this, Bergamo’s 2030 General Mobility Plan aims to shift this balance towards more sustainable options. Central to this strategy is bergamoinbicicletta.it, a project launched in 2022 that goes beyond infrastructure. It integrates safety, digital tools, secure parking, public education, and financial incentives into a cycling ecosystem.
Results so far?
- 38% increase in bike ridership from 2019-2023 (excluding the pandemic)
- Expansion of bike-sharing stations from 24 to 70, with daily uses rising from 4,000 to 15,000
- Creation of 30 km of new bike lanes and 10 km of dedicated paths
- Recognition by ANCI with the 2022 Urban Award for Sustainable Urban Mobility
Bergamo’s approach demonstrates that sustainable change is possible with a multi-faceted and community-focused strategy. Let’s take inspiration from their journey toward a healthier, greener urban future! 🌿🚲
