On 12 December 2022, IURC Latin America held its tenth webinar on “Participatory Planning and Community Engagement”. The event brought together international experts from Italy and Chile to discuss the role of participatory planning processes and how they build trust between the public, private and civil society sectors, as well as the people involved.
The webinar started with the participation of Pablo Yañez Mena, who explained how participatory planning and community engagement has been used in Puerto Montt to create more inclusive cities. In the second part, Ileana Toscano presented how the URBACT Network’s Playful Paradigm, which seeks to increase the capacities of cities to respond to global challenges, including those arising during COVID-19, participated in sharing common learnings and challenges. In conclusion, both panelists agreed on the importance of community participation for urban transformation and on the benefits of sharing challenges, opportunities, strategies, and tools between territories to develop and implement participatory planning processes.
The webinar was attended by representatives from 13 cities and 10 countries.
